Effect of Three Levels of Grazing Nutrition upon Calving and Subsequent Performance in Hereford Heifers
نویسنده
چکیده
There were no significant differences in calf birth weight and size between treatments in s ite of diet-induced differences in mean heifer liveweight of up to 81 e+ 7.4) kg 24 hours post-calving. There was a significantly higher incidence of stillbirth in the poorest-fed Rhodes grass heifers and two of these died as a result of dystocia compared with no dystocia or mortality in the other treatments. Pelvic size between treatments was similar and it is inferred that the inferior calving performance was associated with reduced calving endurance in the poorestfed Rhodes grass heifers. These animals subsequently reared calves which were significantly lighter in liveweight and grew at inferior rates throughout the pre-weaning period.

Reproductive performance of 2-year-old Hereford and Angus heifers as influenced by pre- and post-calving energy intake.
p REPARTUM and post-partum energy intake has been shown to influence reproductive performance of beef cows (Wiltbank et al., 1962, 1964). A low level of energy before calving was shown to delay onset of estrus following calving. Marked differences in conception rate were noted in cows on varying levels of energy following calving. Conception rate was decreased by low levels of energy after calv...

Two experiments were designed to assess the importance of maternal nutrition in the later stages of gestation on reproductive performance of beef females and on the growth and survival of their calves. In experiment 1, 59 Hereford first-calf heifers were assigned to one of two levels of dietary energy (high [HI which was 100% of the recommended level of prepartum energy or low [L] which was 65%...

A 3-yr study was conducted with heifers (n = 170) whose dams were used in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to determine the effects of late gestation (LG) or early lactation (EL) dam nutrition on subsequent heifer growth and reproduction. In LG, cows received 0.45 kg/d of a 42% CP supplement (PS) or no supplement (NS) while grazing dormant Sandhills range. During EL, cows from each l...

The effect of growth rate from birth through 30 months of age on the reproductive performance of Polled Hereford heifers calving as 2-year-olds was examined. Heifers with high gains during the first winter as weanlings had higher breeding efficiency when bred as yearlings, had larger pelvic areas as 2-year-olds, gave birth to larger calves, had less calving difficulty at first parturition and h...

A 3-yr study was conducted with spring-born heifers (n = 240) to determine the effects of developing heifers to either 55 or 60% of mature BW at breeding on reproduction and calf production responses. A concurrent study was also conducted with summer-born heifers (n = 146) to examine effects of breeding heifers with the mature cow herd or 1 mo earlier on reproduction and calf production variabl...
